We’re excited that you’re interested in getting your ham license and joining the amateur radio hobby that can provide a lot of fun as well as a means of communication in an emergency!
If you haven’t, we encourage you to visit the ARRL’s page on getting licensed. The ARRL is the American Radio Relay League – the National Association for Amateur Radio.
Becoming a licensed amateur radio operator requires that you take an official licensing exam. This exam is administered by VEs, or Volunteer Examiners. We have some in our club and they would be glad to help administer an exam for you.
The most basic license class is the Technician Class. This license will get you on the air where you can begin experiencing the fun of amateur radio. When you’re ready, we encourage you to upgrade to General Class as this will open of a whole new world of radio. It gives you operating privileges on many other frequency bands. Beyond General Class is the Extra Class – this gives you all amateur radio frequency spectrum privileges.
Let us know if we can help you in any way and we’ll be glad to do whatever we can to help you get licensed and get on the air!
